It's about giving you the peace of mind to enjoy your fire safely.
Our aim is simple: to treat your home with the same care and respect as we would our own, leaving it as clean as we found it, and leaving you ready to enjoy your fire with confidence.
If you've never had your chimney swept before, it's completely normal to have questions. Will it make a mess? How long will it take? What exactly is Karl checking? And what happens if he finds a problem?
In this guide, we'll walk you through the entire visitβfrom the moment Karl arrives outside your home to the moment your digital certificate arrives in your inboxβso you know exactly what to expect.

Most people think a chimney sweep starts when the doorbell rings. Actually, it starts the moment Karl arrives.
Before unloading any equipment, Karl takes a careful look at your chimney from outside your property. He's making sure everything appears safe and identifying anything that could affect how your chimney performs before he even steps through your front door.
If he notices something unusual, he'll explain it to you before the sweep begins.

One of the first things Karl does when he comes into your home is change into his indoor shoes.
Before any equipment is set up, he'll carefully protect the area around your fireplace using clean sheets and organise everything he'll need for the visit.
Treating your home with respect isn't an extraβit's simply how we believe the job should be done.

This is probably the question we're asked more than any other.
The simple answer is no.
Before any sweeping begins, Karl carefully prepares the area around your fireplace or stove. Depending on the type of appliance, he'll use specialist dust sheets, foam blocks and soot containment equipment to seal the opening, leaving only a small space for the sweeping rods and vacuum hose.
This means that any soot loosened during the sweep stays contained within the fireplace while it's being safely removed.
Many customers tell us afterwards that they had no idea how clean and tidy it would be. That's one of the best compliments we can receive.

With your home protected, Karl then carries out a thorough visual inspection of your fireplace or stove. This is more than a quick glance.
What is Karl looking for?
If Karl notices anything that you'd benefit from knowing, he'll explain it before moving on.

Some customers enjoy seeing how chimney sweeping works and are full of questions. Others simply carry on with their day while Karl gets to work. Either is absolutely fine.
Karl is always happy to explain what he's doing if you're interested, but there's no expectation that you need to watch every step of the process.
Some of our youngest customers are often the most curiousβand if you have a friendly dog, don't be surprised if Karl makes a new friend too. He's a huge dog lover and is always happy to say hello before getting started.

Once all the checks have been completed, the sweeping begins.
At Step In Time we use rotary power sweeping because it allows Karl to choose the right equipment and method for your particular chimney.
Every chimney is different. Some are older masonry chimneys that need a gentler approach, while others have modern stainless steel liners.
By selecting the correct equipment for your chimney, Karl can clean it thoroughly while treating it with the care it deserves. The aim isn't simply to remove soot. It's to leave your chimney clean and ready to perform as efficiently and safely as possible.

Once the sweep is complete, Karl carries out a Type 2 smoke test.
Don't worry about remembering the nameβthat simply means we're checking that your chimney draws properly and that smoke is leaving your home safely through the correct chimney pot.
Before the test begins, Karl warms the flue. This helps create the natural upward draw that every chimney relies on and ensures the test is carried out correctly.
He'll then carry out the smoke test, checking that the smoke travels freely up the chimney and exits exactly where it should. If anything doesn't look right, he'll investigate further and explain what he's found.

At the end of every successful sweep, you'll receive a digital Certificate of Chimney Sweeping by email. This records the checks carried out during your appointment and confirms that your chimney was swept to the appropriate industry standards on the day of the visit.
One question we're asked surprisingly often is: "How long is the certificate valid for?" It's a great question, but the answer isn't quite what most people expect...Think of it like having your windows cleaned.
A window cleaner can show you they've cleaned your windows today, but they can't guarantee they'll still be spotless next month. A chimney sweeping certificate works in much the same way. It confirms that your chimney was professionally swept and checked on the day of your appointment. From that point onwards, how often the fire is used, what fuel is burned and how the appliance is operated are all outside the chimney sweep's control. The certificate is a record of the work completedβnot a guarantee of future condition.

Fortunately, problems that mean your fireplace cannot be used at all are quite rare.
However, if Karl identifies something that makes your chimney or appliance unsafe to use, he'll explain exactly what he's found and answer any questions you have.
Rather than issuing a certificate, you'll receive a digital warning notice explaining why the appliance shouldn't be used until the issue has been resolved. We may also choose to tape off the appliance as a reminder.
Safety will always come before convenience. Although nobody likes receiving a warning notice, we'd much rather help you prevent a more serious problem than ignore something that could put your home or family at risk.

Before packing everything away, Karl will make sure your fireplace is clean and tidy before talking you through anything you need to know.
Some customers have lots of questions. Others simply want reassurance that everything is in good order. Either way, he'll make sure you understand the outcome of the visit and know what happens next. Shortly afterwards, your digital certificate (or, in the rare event it's needed, a warning notice) will arrive in your inbox.
What we'll leave you with:
By the time Karl packs away, you have much more than a professionaly swept chimney. You'll have:

We understand the importance of a functional chimney, and our goal is to keep your home or business safe & warm all year round. Chimney sweeping is just the first part. It's also essential to understand how a fire burns, and to optimise the conditions for combustion to avoid carbon monoxide production.
